Honey Bee Science Discovery Program
Capital Hill Library
Monday, July 30 @ 2:00 – 2:45 p.m.
A presentation by a young beekeeper on honey bees and the science behind them.  The short interactive presentation is followed by hands-on learning stations, including:  Honey Bee Discovery Lab (featuring products of the hive, beekeeping equipment and tools, magnifying glasses, honey tasting, and question and answer time), flower seed planting, pollination station, honey bee board games, and coloring sheets.  This discovery lab is for children ages 3 years and up, and adults enjoy the lab, as well.

Painted Rocks
Oregon City Public Library
Thursday, August 2 @ 2:30 – 3:30 p.m.
Using paints to decorate rocks for your own collection or share with a friend! For humans who just finished grades 6-12.

 

EVENT PICK OF THE WEEK
OMSI New monthly planetarium concert series called Kendall Concerts: Music Under the Dome. Every month, musicians from all genres will perform in the planetarium with lasers, stars, and galaxies flashing across the domed screen (it’s super cool).

Wooden Sleepers | August 9, 8 p.m.
This Portland folk-grass band is set to release their deput LP “Storm Floatin’” this fall.  Their Kendall Concerts performance is a chance to hear their album ahead of its October release.

The Brothers Billygoat | September 2, 8 p.m.
This duo featuring harp, keyboard and percussion will play beneath beautiful and intricate self-made stop-motion films, projected on the Kendall Planetarium’s 52-foot dome.

The Bylines | October 14, 7 p.m.
A jazz-inspired, story-driven pop duo, who most recently worked with the Oregon Symphony and Carnegie Hall to create the “Lullaby Project”.

Choro da Alegria is a Portland-based ensemble dedicated
to playing wonderful melodies from Brazil. Choro da Alegria draws much
inspiration from the genre “Choro,” which means cry or lament and
which has loosely been called Brazilian ragtime. The music was created in thelate 19th century in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and despite its meaning, commonly has very fast, happy-sounding melodies. The group will also perform some classic melodies from the Bossa Nova repertoire.

It was a city that touched many lives in a very short period of time. And on May 30, 1948, it was a city that disappeared just as quickly as it came into existence. Join Zita Podany, author of Vanport, from the Images of America series,
for a historical presentation on this remarkable city and its legacy that will
not soon be forgotten. This program is free and recommended for adults and teens, ages 16 and older.

Stephen Hawking died this week on Pi Day in a weird coincidence
Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. And however difficult life may seem , there is always something you can do, and succeed at. It matters that you don’t give up.”

Stephen Hawking, world renowned physicist and author of books, including A Brief History of Time and The Theory of Everything, died in his home in Cambridge. Hawking was known for his work with black holes and relativity, and he appeared as himself on television shows including The Simpsons and The Big Bang Theory.

Are You Afraid of the Dark? gets film remake by the screenwriter of Stephen King’s It released last year. The Midnight Society will be coming to the big screen and if you check out the video I’ll have in the show notes you’ll see who freaky the clowns were in multiple episodes. I have one library in my area that has the entire set and I will be rewatching all of them very soon. October 11 2019. I think this is the same time that the second part of the new It will be released as well. I love October and I love scary films and I’m so excited. Luckily I will have Stranger Things 3 to hold me over.

Sharp Objects limited HBO series will premiere at ATX Television Festival
The second teaser trailer for The Handmaid’s Tale has been released
Making a Murderer will have a second season in 2019 and a new series Convicting a Murderer will be released showing the prosecutions side

UTAH 
Beginning in January 2018, NASA began a year-long series of monthly topics, focusing on extending human presence in the Solar System. Each month will include themed outreach materials for your programs/exhibits. Castle Dale Library has signed up to present these programs to the community!

OHIO
To help reach an underserved portion of readers, at least two central Ohio library systems have begun to implement programs and storytimes dedicated to patrons on the autism spectrum.

Barbara Smith Randall will present her book, “Willamette Valley Wineries,” a pictorial history of the Willamette Valley wine industry. The book illustrates the challenges, hardships and ultimate success of the Willamette Valley wineries. Randall shares the history through photographs and stories from winemakers and their families, as well as the resources at Linfield College’s Oregon Wine History Archives in McMinnville, Oregon. Books will be available for purchase and signing at a cost of $22.99 each. Everyone is invited / This event is free.
